The Mt. Hood "Climb"

Well.... "There is no joy in Mudville tonight". Didn't make the summit. There was no snow on the mountain which made climbing a lot more tedius. A LOT of loose rock and a very fine sand. It took longer than expected to just reach the halfway point. If we had pushed on we would have gotten to the technical section after the sun had risen which would have made the potential for rockfall high. Also our energy level wasn't what it should have been, after dealing with the loose rock and sand, to climb the technical section as it is NOT a walk in the park. So... We decided to cut our loses and abort the mission. When we got to the bottom we turned and looked at the mountain and realized we had made the right decision, as there was NO snow on the Hogsback and none on the ridge leading to the summit. It would have been a rock climb which we weren't prepared for.

What this has done is show me that I have to train harder/smarter and have faith in the Lord because I will not allow any more DNF's. All in all it was a good trip as I got to spend time with my good friend Peter and Mt. Hood isn't going anywhere.

I do feel bad for all the companies, check out my sponsors photo album, who have helped me out with this goal I had set out to achieve, to show that just because one has had prostate cancer at 70 years old it's NOT a death sentence. It's a sign to get out and live your life to the FULLEST. Forget about sitting in a lounger and watching test patterns on a TV. Get out and relish every moment. Don't forget every day above ground is a GOOD day.

Stay tuned for the next adventure as ice climbing season is almost here.

  1. Went up almost a year ago to date, faced similar conditions and made almost the same decision, only higher up. TR: http://www.summitpost.org/trip-report/599397/Old-Chute-2010-Winter-Ascent.html
